The Week of Fake News is a one-off large cross-sector initiative encompassing cinema, music, academic debate and fine arts. Its objective is to investigate how fake news and media bias have impacted the democratic institutions and the election process in Brazil, drawing pertinent parallels to the UK and the rest of the world.
The event will take place at various venues across the UK between May 24th and May 29th, 2022. The timing of the initiative is crucial because of the impending presidential elections in Brazil. The first round of the vote is scheduled for October 2nd, with a potential run-off (in case no candidate has more than 50% of the votes) on October 30th.
Audiences will learn about the nefarious tactics that reactionary forces have utilised in order to spread disinformation, thereby staging parliamentary coups, conducting extensive lawfare campaigns against individuals, creating a "culture of hate" and subverting election results.
Various prestigious organisations will take part in the Week of Fake News. They include the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the Brazil institute of Kings College London, the British Film Institute and the Rich Mix.
Key guests and speakers include intellectual, artists and politicians from Brazil and the UK: such as Jean Wyllys, Márcia Tiburi, Wagner Schwartz, Débora Diniz, Jeremy Corbyn and Baroness Christine Blower.
